Burley W. Howell, age 95 of Maryville, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at Colonial Hills Healthcare Center. He was a member and deacon of Piney Level Baptist Church; member of New Providence Lodge #128 F.&A.M.; member of ALCOA's 25-Year Club.

Preceded in death by: wife, Sarah Maude Howell; father, David Howell; mother and step-father, Elizabeth and Lee Parker; granddaughter, Valerie Tunnell; sisters, Margaret Cook and Ruth Nuchols; brothers, Lawrence and Harris Parker. Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, William Robert and Connie Howell of Maryville; daughters and sons-in-law, Mildred and Winfred (Jack) Medlin of Maryville, Barbara and Kyle Conway of Maryville, Arelene and Lou Alonza of Marietta, GA and Juanita and Bill Roberson of Knoxville; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Jennie Shields and Lela Mae England both of Maryville and Elizabeth Graves of Maryland; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 4, 2004 in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary with Rev. George Macht officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Howell, Sarah Maude Keeble age 91 of Maryville, died Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at Fairpark Healthcare Center. She was a member of Piney Level Baptist Church. Preceded in death by: Parents, Sam & Clemmie Keeble; Grand-daughter, Valarie Ann Tunnell; Brothers, W.T. Keeble, Carl Keeble, and Lloyd Keeble; Sisters, Ellen Miller, Belle Rahe, Flora Russell, Nora Norton, Edna Lowrey.

Janette Nuchols Gray

Janette Nuchols Gray passed away May 27, 2004 at a nursing home in Brandon, FL. She worked for Union Carbide Nuclear Company in Oak Ridge for 40 years and had been retired from there for 10 years. She was a member of Kern Memorial Methodist Church in Oak Ridge and continued to live in Oak Ridge after retirement. She had recently been living with her daughter and family in Riverview, FL when she became ill. Jeanette enjoyed reading, walking, and visiting with friends.

She is preceded in death by: Parents, Hensley and Reva Nuchols; Son, Robert Gray; Brothers, Ted and Leroy Nuchols. She is survived by: Daughter and Son-in-law, Susan Gray Varela and husband J.M. of Riverview, FL; Daughter, Sandra Gray of Oak Ridge; Five Grandchildren, Joey Gray of Knoxville, Miranda Miller of Savannah, GA, Christopher Horton of Maryville, and Nick & Katie Varela of Riverview, FL. She will be sadly missed by family and her many friends.

Receiving of friends will be at Smith Mortuary, Maryville from 5:00 until 7:00 PM, Monday, May 31, 2004. Memorial service will be at Kern Memorial Methodist Church in Oak Ridge at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, June 1, 2004 with interment to follow at Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery in Maryville.

Jenkins, Tommie "Granny", age 97, of South Knoxville, passed away July 11, 2001 at Baptist Hospital. Preceded in death by husband, Labe Jenkins; parents, William and Mattie Goddard Nuchols, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and 3 son-in-laws, Claude Thomas, Roy Hundley, Eldridge "Shady" Payne. Member of Gayland Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors

Daughters: Lois Thomas, Betty Hundley, Annette Payne.
Truly blessed with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren.

Algie M. Galyon, age 89 of Maryville, passed away Monday, May 17, 2004, at Colonial Hills Nursing Home. She was a member of Old Piney Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Galyon; parents, Jane and Mance Hall; sister, Ada Potter; special nephew, Fred Potter.

Thomas, Robert T., born October 29, 1916, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2003, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U. S. Marine Corps. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hattie Lebow and Robert M. Thomas; 2 sisters, Lena Boyed and Dora Bingham.

Survivors include his son, Charles Thomas of Maryville; daughter, Caroline; 4 grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives; loving companion, Osie Lane.

Michael Edward Nuchols
Retired K-25 mechanic

Michael Edward Nuchols, 54, of Clinton, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, at his home. Mr. Nuchols had retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems Inc. after 28 years of service as a sheet metal mechanic at the Oak Ridge K-25 Site. He was born in Anderson County on March 27, 1944. He was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church.

Mr. Nuchols is survived by his wife, Sandra Ware Nuchols; his daughter, Susie Rickett and her husband, John, of Clinton; his son, Howard Nuchols and his wife, Emma, of Clinton; his parents, Kenneth and Mary Nuchols of Cocoa, Fla.; his sister, Jeanie Young of Rockledge, Fla.; and his brother, Robert Nuchols and his wife, Jewell, of Oak Ridge.

He is also survived by six grandchildren, Elizabeth and Emily Burgess, Victoria Rickett, Abigail Nuchols and Stephanie and Wesley Hansard; and by several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Howard Ware and the Rev. John Clark officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.




Nellie W. Nuchols

Nuchols, Nellie W. - age 88, of Knoxville, passed away May 7, 1998, at Holston Health Center.
Born February 20, 1910, in Knoxville, to the late Charles and Josephine Anderson Webber. Preceded in death by her husband, Edward Nuchols. Survivors, daughter, Marguerite Parks of Powder Springs, Ga.; grandchildren, Andrea and husband Stanley Carter, Jeanette and husband Barry Campbell, Beth and husband Steve Nations, Sherrie and husband Dave Gentry, Andrew and wife Sandra Parks, all of Georgia; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, all of Georgia; two nieces, Mrs. John McConnell and Phyllis McMillian of Knoxville. Mrs. Hitch was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Hitch; parents, Thomas L. and Susan Nuchols; brothers, Jim and Sam; sister, Sarah Moser.

Pesterfield, Ethel Coulter, age 92 of Maryville, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2002, at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a wonderful person who loved everyone she met but with a special place in her heart for children. As a charter member of Monte Vista Baptist Church, she was proud of the fact that she taught Sunday School for so many years in the children’s department that she had the opportunity to teach second-generation families.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. B. Pesterfield; father and mother, William Houston and Leah Margaret Everett Coulter; brothers, Ben, Ernest and Horace Coulter; sisters, Nora Margaret Coulter, Mrs. Alex (Minnie) Long and Mrs. Floyd (Bardia) Pierce.

Erma E. Pesterfield

Erma Everett Pesterfield, a descendent of the Revolutionary War soldier Robert Everett, was born to Robert Frank and Nellie Williams Everett, on October 12, 1910. She was a sibling of Earl, Earnest, Raymond, Frances, and twins Max and Maxie. Erma was reared on Sevierville Road on the farm adjacent to the current Asbury Acres Retirement Center. She was educated at the Chandler School, Everett High School, Maryville College, and East Tennessee State Teacher's College, now known as East Tennessee State University.

On February 10, 1933, she married Edgar Lee (Ed) Pesterfield, an ALCOA employee. Two sons were born into this family - Dwain and David. Throughout her life, Erma was a children's educator. For many years, she taught in various Blount County Schools. In 1950, she founded Tom Thumb Schoolette, a private nursery and kindergarten - a forerunner to today's public kindergartens. She operated this school until 1974, when she joined her late husband in retirement. She was also active in Christian education at First United Methodist Church in Maryville - a teacher for many years in the nursery department and later Children's Coordinator. Erma was a charter member of the Mu chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional teachers sorority, and continued this membership until now. In 1979, she received the Distinguished Member Award at First United Methodist Church, where she has been a member for over 60 years. She was an active member of the Belle Henry Young Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women, and Circle 5 of the United Methodist Women, and served as a member of the Hostess Committee for almost 30 years. She was a truly gracious southern lady who enjoyed entertaining her family and friends.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Dwain and Jane Pesterfield and David and Betty Jo Pesterfield, by her granddaughter and grandson-in-law Jennifer and Shane Geren, and her grandsons Brad and Brent Pesterfield, her sister and brother-in-law Sam and Maxie Blevens. She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Funeral services will be 7:30 P.M. Monday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Darris Doyal and Rev. Sterling Turner officiating. The interment will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday in Grandview Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home. WALKER, Alice, age 90 of Maryville, passed away Sunday, January 4, 2004.
Alice Walker was born on September 12, 1913 in the same house in which she has always lived, the youngest of seven children. Alice Walker was a lifelong member of Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she was a music director of children, youth and adults for 47 years, and a devoted Sunday School teacher for 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph H. Walker; parents, John Anderson and Mary James White; brothers and sisters, Lige White, John White, Alse White, Minnie Hodge, Nannie McClanahan and Grace Whitehead.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Don White Walker and Charlene Walker; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Tina and Keith Hackney; grandson, Ryan White Walker; beloved great grandson, Trey Hackney; sisters-in-law, Nancy Walker and Dee Walker; brother- in-law and sister-in-law, Doug and Gladys Walker; several nieces and nephews.

John White, 100

White, John Wesley age 100 of Maryville passed away Thursday, May 30, 2002. He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church where he had served as deacon since 1946. He retired from Alcoa Aluminum Company in 1968.

Preceded in death by: Wife, Dora Boring White; Parents, John A. & Mary James White; Brothers, Alse and Lige White; Sisters, Minnie Hodge and Grace Whitehead. Kidd, Ralph Herman Age 68 of Alcoa, died on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 at his home. He was a member of Alcoa First Baptist Church, where he had served as Sunday School Director and Deacon. He retired from ALCOA and was a member of their 25-Year Club. He was an Alcoa City Commissioner and on the Board of the Tennessee Vocational Training Center. He was a founding member of the Alcoa High School Alumni Association and on the Alcoa City Schools Foundation Board. Preceded in death by: Parents, Ernest and Ruth Duff Kidd.

Phillip E. Millsaps, 51

Millsaps, Phillip E. age 51 of Philadelphia, TN, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 12, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a 1969 graduate of Everett High School and also graduated from the University of Tennessee. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in Viet Nam and was a member of ALCOA's 25-Year Club. Phil loved to play the piano and was an avid gardener.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray & Pauline Chapman Millsaps. Virginia Teffeteller Singleton

SINGLETON, Virginia Teffeteller, formally of Maryville, and Akron, Oh., died May 9, 2003 at Roger Huntington Nursing Center, Greer South Carolina after a ten year battle with diabetes. She was a native of Blount County and a graduate of Everett High School. She was a homemaker and in the 1970s she was a member of the Akron Ohio Childrens Home Board. She was preceded in death by her father, John H. Teffeteller and mother, Lucille Ball Teffeteller.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth L. Singleton. Son, Kenton L. Singleton; Granddaughters, Amanda and Amber of S.C.; Sisters and their husbands, Bobbie and Fred Hoyos and Joan and Ralph Shields; Nephews, Fred K. Michael White, 61

White, Michael C. "Coach" Age 61 of Maryville, died Thursday, February 6, 2003 at Blount Memorial Hospital. Coach White was a former Blount County Commissioner and member of the Maryville Church of Christ. He was also retired from the Tennessee Air National Guard 134th Refueling Unit. Most notably, however, Coach White is remembered for his many years of service as an educator in the Blount County schools system. He served the community as a teacher and coach at Townsend, Everett, Walland and William Blount High Schools. He spent most of those years coaching football and baseball and in more recent times has a brief tenure as the golf coach at Heritage High School while teaching physical education at a number of elementary schools. Coach White also spent 3 years as the head football coach at Unicoi County High School in Erwin, Tennessee and was an assistant coach at Maryville College for 8 years.

Nuchols, Rebecca Marie, age 20, and infant daughter Kaley Marie went to be with Jesus on Saturday, May 15, 2004 after a tragic car accident. She was a 2001 Honor Graduate of Seymour High School and was employed by Adventure Group of Sevierville. She was a member of the former Miracle Baptist Church on West Ford Valley Rd. She was a loving daughter and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Nuchols, James Gordon - age 68, of Stephens Rd., Lake City, Tenn., passed away Saturday evening in Ansted, W.Va. Mr. Nuchols worked for 16 years with Air Products in Cleveland, Ohio. Before retirement he was a salesman for Ford Furniture Co. in Lake City. Member of First Baptist Church in Lake City. Veteran of US Air Force.

POTTER, Evelyn Smith, age 86 of Maryville, passed away Sunday, June 27th, 2004 at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a member of MonteVista Baptist Church. Preceded in death by parents, Hazel and Nellie Smith. Brother, Boyd Smith.

Survivors include: husband, Raymond Potter. Son and daughter-in-law, Ivan and Lynn Potter or Hurst, TX. Granddaughter, Brandi King and her husband Steven of Hurst, TX. Great grandchildren, Shelby and Travis King of Hurst, TX. Sister, Eunice Pinyan of Maryville. Nephew, Randy Pinyan of Alcoa. Nieces, Kay Snodgrass of Pennsylvania, Pamela Gerhart, and Gayle Holloway of Maryville.

A memorial service will be 7:00 PM Tuesday, June 29th, 2004 at McCammon-Ammons-Click Chapel with Rev. Bob Dalton officiating.

Everett, Gary Vaughn, age 53, of Maryville, died Friday, October 28, 2005, at Blount Memorial Hospital. Mr. Everett was a member of East Maryville Baptist Church and a member of the 25 year club with Alcoa. He loved the outdoors, particularly fishing, bluegrass music and his dog Scudder.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Richard and Rebecca Everett and Fred and Alice Shields. He is survived by sons, Corey Vaughn Everett and Daniel Everett; grandson, Jacob Richard Everett; parents, Richard and Mary Ruth Everett; brother and sister-in-law, Bud and Deb Everett; sisters and brother-in-law, Carolyn Everett and Sonya and Steve Newman; all of Maryville; nephews, Dustin and wife Natalie Gross, Josh and Jordan Newman, Eric Wallace; nieces, Melissa and Kristen Everett, Jessica Newman, Brianna and Briella Morgan; special friend, Sierra Helton; as well as many other close friends.

Funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 30, 2005, in the Trinity Chapel with Rev. George Macht officiating. The family and friends will assemble at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 31, 2005, at Piney Level Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery for Interment service. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 30, 2005 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary, Maryville.

Wanda Sue Everett, age 62, of Maryville, passed away Monday, June 6, 2005. She was born on August 11, 1942. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucy Bernice Everett; great-niece, Abbey Makenslee Tallent.

Survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Donnie and Anna Everett of Maryville; nieces and their spouses, Tonya and Kevin Headrick, Kelly and Cory Tallent; nephew and his spouse, Donnie and Tiffany Everett; great-nephews, Austin Everett Tallent, Riley Cameron Everett; great-niece, Emma Grace Tallent, and baby Headrick due in August.

Ms. Everett was cremated and a graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2005 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Greg Long officiating. Arrangements by Dotson Funeral Home, Wildwood.

COMPTON, Dorothy White, age 78 of Maryville, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at Asbury Acres. She was a member of Everett Hills Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her parents, James Roy and Deva Best White.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Edward D. “Ed” Compton of Maryville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Elmer and Oneda White and Homer and Nancy White all of Maryville; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Everett Hills Baptist Church with Dr. John Franklin and Dr. Allen Raines officiating. The interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery.

WELLS, William Carl, age 89 of Maryville, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2005, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Maryville First United Methodist Church, was a graduate of Maryville College, was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army, during which time he was Sgt. Major for the POW Camp at Camp Shelby, MS. He was a salesman with WGAP for 52 years and was a life long musician in the Maryville area.

Mr. Wells was preceded in death by his parents, J. L. (Lennie) and Rhoda Alice Lawson Wells and brother, J. Lloyd Wells.

Survivors include his nephew and wife, John and Lavone Wells of McDonough, GA; cousins, Mose Waters of Maryville, Bobbie Westling of Orange, CA, Helen Sullivan and Bud Waters both of Maryville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Abbott and Pastors Brenda and Larry Carroll officiating. The interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery.

WHITE, Elmer Lee, age 82 of Maryville, passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Everett Hills Baptist Church, was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in World War II with the 673rd Engineers Topo Unit and in Korea with the 30th Ordnance Battalion, retired from ALCOA, a member of the 25 Year Service Club and was an AARP Tax volunteer from 1986-2005.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Roy and Deva White; sister, Dorothy Compton; infant grandson, Andrew Koopman.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Oneda Whitehead White; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and David Koopman of Maryville; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Richard White and Jean Engelke of Baltimore, Randy and Kathy White of Powell; grandchildren, Christopher Koopman, Matthew White, Kelly White, Travis Engelke White, Amelia Engelke White; brother and sister-in-law, Homer and Nancy White of Maryville.

DOROTHY LAMBERT HERRON

Dorothy Lambert Herron, died at home on Tuesday, August 29, 2000. She was a graduate of Maryville College and U.T. and a lifelong member of Maryville First Baptist Church. During her career she was employed by Blount County Schools for 35 years, first teaching at Everett Elementary, and was materials supervisor when she retired. She served on various boards in Blount County (UT Agricultural Development Board, Blount County Education Foundation, Historic Sam Houston School Board, Republican Executive Committee and Farm Bureau Board of Directors).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Kate Lambert and one brother, John M. Lambert who died in infancy; grandparents, John L. and Belle Lambert and William M. and Eliza Nuchols.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Robert Herron; daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Mark Griffith; grandson, Jason R. Griffith; granddaughter, Catherine (CJ) Griffith; uncles, Ray Lambert and Gene Boyd of Atlanta; aunts, Grace Shirley of Knoxville, Jean Lambert and Verna Nuchols both of Maryville, and a number of beloved cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. John Sharp officiating. The interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Grandview Cemetery. He is survived by his mother, Gladys Whitehead Nuchols; daughters and sons-in-law, Yolanda and Mark Davis of Alabama, Angie and Randy Winegar of Maryville, Elisa and Dale Hensley of Friendsville; son and daughter-in-law, Rex Jr. and Carla Nuchols; brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Janie Nuchols; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Ray Perkins, all of Maryville; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Kasey, Matthew and Hannah Nuchols, Brandon Bailey, Morgan Winegar, B.J., Jonathan and Emily Davis; ex-wife, Carol Nuchols of Maryville; companion, Nancy Jo Nuchols of Maryville.

Funeral service will be at 8 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Home in Maryville with the Rev. Scott Campbell and the Rev. Obie Campbell officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11 a.m. Monday at Old Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery for graveside services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your local Gideon Camp to purchase Bibles. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
