Stories Told From Her Life

By Rosa Lee James

Grandma Nuchols used to come and stay with us for a while. Grandma James came to visit too, but she didn't stay. Grandpa James ran a store.
When Dad (my father) had typhoid fever, he almost died. His temperature went so high he had blisters in his mouth and rectum. Dad would say, "I've got this dad-burned thing in my mouth."
Fate had typhoid fever too, and Bess had to work in the store. I had the swine flu and so did Dortha. Abe Nuchols, (first cousin raised by Mother and Dad) was about 12 years old, and he had it too. He took care of Dortha (she was only three months old). I slept in the bed in the room where we had that big fireplace and Abe would sit in front of the fire and hold Dortha.
Dad ran a store and gave credit to everybody, but he didn't get paid back much. He kept daily records, but sometimes when another customer would come in the store, he would forget to write down what the other customer had bought. He lost a lot of money that way. All the relatives expected to get their groceries at a discount! At night he would take the daily records home and record them into the individual credit accounts. That was a lot of work too.
We were a little better off than most, but when we would get hard up, Mother would sell off some land. She had good business sense and always seemed to know when to sell and buy (at times we owned around 1000 acres). She used to say, "if a person had the money, they should buy up as much land as they could in the Smokey Mountains, because some day that land is going to be worth a lot of money."
When we were kids, Mother and Dad wouldn't let us drink coffee, but Maude used to always sit down at the end of the table where the coffee pot was, and she would keep her cup behind the coffee pot and would manage to have coffee. Dad used to give me what he called "soakie". He would soak up a piece of bread with coffee. Here, he let me develop a taste for coffee and then wouldn't let me drink it!
We all used to form a circle around that big fireplace and then, the hotter it got, the more we moved back until we were at the table (eating table about 12 feet long).
A lot of times we had cornbread and milk for supper (and anything else left over). Oh, that was the best cornbread I ever had in my life!
I can still see Mother sitting in front of the fireplace studying her Bible. No matter how busy she was, she always found time to study her Bible.
One time Mae went to visit , I think it was Geneva , and she bought a pair of white kid shoes. Oh, they were really beautiful. She wasn't too popular with us because we didn't have any new shoes. One time when they needed to be cleaned she put them in the oven to dry out (evidently the oven was just barely warm). Well, somebody came along and built a fire in the stove, and that really fixed her shoes! The toes just curled up! Well, we were pretty happy about the whole thing.
Mae and Maude were always persuading Mother to get things for them that we couldn't get out of her. One time she bought them leghorn hats. Oh, they were beautiful and soft. They had real pretty handmade flowers on them.
Milas Paine used to stay with us and do some work. There weren't any extra rooms to sleep in, so he slept in the same room with Grandma Nuchols. He never would make his bed, and this old hen used to get up on his bed and lay an egg.
Mother used to love to hear us girls sing. We were always going to "singings" on Sunday afternoons. When we practiced, a lot of times we would go over to Jennie Harmon's, and she would help us get started on the right key. Maude was always pinching me when we would sing.
One time when I was about seven years old, I went to visit Doris, and she made me a real pretty white eyelet embroidery dress. I was so proud of that dress. On Sunday I was supposed to sing a solo at church and I planned to wear my new dress. But it was raining and Mother said I couldn't wear it. I was sick about it. Mae was mad at me about something and had put my other dress under the mattress, so it was full of wrinkles. We weren't ever allowed to iron on Sunday, so I got to wear my new dress after all! I sang "Oh Happy Day," Well, it sure was a happy day for me because I got to wear my new dress. Bess played her organ. It was small and portable and could be taken anywhere.
We had a goat that was so mean and butted a lot. We used to make a seesaw and put Mae on the other end. The we would tease the old goat and as soon as she would head for Mae, we would weight down the other end and lift her in the air. We got a real kick out of that.
Fate and Lizzie used to take us through the field where there was a bull. They weren't afraid of it, but I was literally half scared to death. It just terrified me.
We had an orchard near the school and were we ever popular! We weren't supposed to get into it, but we did sometimes.
There were some woods near the school. The girls went to the bathroom at one end and the boys used the other end. We finally got toilets, but we used the woods a long time.
Bob could kill a snake right off. He had a dog named "Ole Doc". If you saw Ole Doc, you knew Bob was around.
We had honey bees. Bob was always asleep in a corner or under a table. One time I found him in a barrel with the bees.
One of our horses was blind. We called him Ole Matt. Even though he was blind, he knew where his stable was. One day Mother was sitting on the side porch breaking beans. We were supposed to watch Ole Matt, but he go up on the porch and came around to where the cellar door was. We were scared to death he would fall in, but we got him away. If he had fallen in the cellar, I guess he would still be there because there was no way we could get him out.
We has 25 or 30 horses, all ages. Some were buggy horses and some work horses.
All of us kids with hoes would hoe out a corn patch in no time all all.
We grew everything imaginable, almost everything we ate. We filled in from the store.
We sold tomatoes by the crate to the cannery in Maryville. Turnips and cabbage were put up on the fence, then covered with straw. They kept all winter this way. We put apples in barrels with lime, and they kept all winter too.
I used to kill chickens for cooking. I could ring their necks, but one time I took a 22 and, to my surprise, shot one right through the eye.
More of the bushel baskets were ruined because we would hold them and let a goat butt them. Dad didn't like that at all.
Everybody ran my legs off. It was, "Rose, run to the barn." "Rose, go to the store."
Dad used to say, "if the house caught on fire, the water bucket would be the first to burn," because it was always dry.

(Granny's family. Her name was Rebecca Jane Nuchols. She married William Logan James. He was called "Bid." She was from a very large family. These are some of their names; Bess, Dave, Emma, John, Rebecca, Willie.)

Aunt Bessie was very sick. She had four girls and died when her boy was still a baby. Mother took care of them a lot. One of the girls names Fannie had gotten her dress very dirty. Mother commented on it. Fannie left the room and returned shortly. She said,"See, it's all clean now." She had turned her dress wrong side out.
Some of Aunt Emma's children were Don, Jim, Wilma, Cad, Clara, and Walt. Jim went to California. He had a boy and a girl. He worked for a railroad company and was killed by a street car.
   Willie (Cameron) lived at Walland.
Joe married Aunt Emma. He brought two horses when he came to the County Court. He was a circuit judge. He always stayed at our house. When he drank coffee he would pour it in his saucer. Their oldest boy was names Don. Wilma could play the piano and we would all sit around and listen. She married pretty well. Her husband bought her silk stockings!
Bob and I used to take the young horses to get salt. I remember we used to go by some chestnut trees. Bob called one of his horses Ole George, and the other Ole Sweetheart , she was the mean one. While Ole George was eating the salt, Bob got a stick and hit Ole Sweetheart to keep her away. Well, Bob got too close to her so she kicked him right under the jaw and knocked him out cold. I tried to carry him, but I was about as big as he was. He didn't stay knocked out too long. I helped him about half way down the field. It scared me half to death.
There used to be a big old bird that sang in a Birch tree at night, and right next to the tree some sprouts were growing up. The sprouts died and left stuffy sticks. Well, one time I climbed up in the tree, but I slipped and fell right spraddled on those sprouts and they stuck in me and it really did hurt. Lizzie carried me about a half mile.
I was climbing on a tin roof one time and that is how I got this scar on my knee. I got this other scar on my leg when Maud was trying to use an axe.
Mother managed the farm. We raised almost everything on the farm, but we filled in from a store where Dad used to work. We raised geese, turkeys, ducks, etc. One old turkey would bite you. I've milked as many as seven cows in one morning. Had to then carry it to the spring house and strain it through flour sacks. I had to skim cream off crocks and put it in cream jars. I took some of the milk to the house and some to the calves (Blue John). We left the calves with their mothers for several weeks.
One time when I took the lid off the milk, under the lid was a cloth and on it was a coiled snake. Scared me half to death! We kept the spring full of minnows. My brother Fate used them for bait to fish.
Sometimes we would have egg eating contests. One time I won but paid for it by messing the bed.
Maude stepped on a needle with thread in it. Half of it came out years later.
Mae climbed a tree and caught a crow in it's nest. She tried to teach it to talk.
Once we tied two cows' tails together. We wanted to find out what would happen, but figured it would come untied. The cows got to pulling until one pulled off the other's tail. Eventually, the other tail fell off, before Dad saw it. When he finally did notice it, he said, "Now Jenny, that cow was laying down and another cow stepped on her tail and pulled it off when she tried to get up." We didn't tell the truth about that until we were grown!
We used to go to the corn crib in the field and shuck corn. We sure did scramble around when we saw the dog stirring up the rats. Fate would get us to shuck the corn and play a game. A slightly red kernel counted 5 points, and a real red one, 10 points, etc.
There was always a tribe of nieces and nephews visiting us.
There was always lice at school. Certain days the teachers would look for them. Maud's hair was hard to look for them, because her hair was so curly.
Dad and I almost got hit by a train. I used to drive Dad to work in the buggy. He worked in a grocery store on Lincoln Road in Alcoa. There was a colored man who always bought a dime's worth of steak. Dad said to him, "How can you feed your big family on that much meat?" He said "The old folks eats the meat and the kids eats the gravy."
We had a persimmon tree. I tried and tried to climb it but never could. Mae could climb anything.
One time Mae was mad at me, so when flowers came at Easter time, she pretended they were hers. There must have been two dozen, and she was so generous in giving away some here and there. It wasn't until Sunday afternoon that I found out Bill had sent those flowers to me! Maryville College boys loved to come to our house because they could always get a lot to eat. Each of us girls had a certain corner in the living room to feed our dates. We tried to outdo each other on making our tray look the prettiest. Afterwards, all four of us would get together and tell each other things about our dates. They figured I was the one to try out things because I was the youngest. It's a wonder Bill ever married me, I was so mean to him, just because I listened to the others.
I remember a Mrs. Davis at church. We had out church services at the Union School House. Boys from the college would preach there. We would have singings on Sunday afternoons and Bess would bring her portable organ and play for us. It really was a lot of fun.
This is where Mother stopped talking about her past. She had been telling me all these things that happened, then, after five days, she stopped. I believe this is all true, because I remember hearing so many of these stories when I was a child.
