Leonard lives in Richmond, Virginia, where he and his wife, Barbara Lee love to fish. The following is a story that Leonard and Barbara wrote, pertaining to an adventure that the lived through!

On July 2nd, (1999) Friday, we finally were able to take our Jon Boat into Pamlico Sound for some Speckled Trout fishing. We left the sailing center from the campgrounds at 9:00 am. We had to wait for a small shower to pass over.
The sun came out & the wind calmed down some from the SW. We headed for marker #4, one of our favorite holes, NW of Rodanthe. Our campground is in Waves. We started catching trout & then Barbara Lee hooked up with THE BIG ONE again. No, not Needlenose, this was the biggest Speckled Trout I had ever seen. It was at least 24" long & big & mean, at least 8-10 pounds. She caught it on a 5' Bass rod but was unable to raise the tip of the pole because the fish was so strong. The wind & waves had started to pick up some & when I got it in the landing net, the waves hit the boat & the boat tipped, I almost fell out & BUBBA got away. I am telling you all this to lead up to our disaster. We decided to make 1 last run into the SW wind & drift back for 1 more try before we went in.
This was about noon on Friday. When I slowed the boat down & then to a stop, waves of water just kept rolling into the boat & all the time the pump was still running. We both started to bail but to no avail, another wave hit us & filled the boat 1/2 full of water. I told Barbara Lee to get out of the boat as it was sinking.
When I saw it was going down, I remembered a part from my Boating Safety Course I took on the Internet last year. I told her to help me turn the boat over as we were in 8 feet of water. We both got on the same side & pushed it under water & pulled the boat over upside down so we could float on it. The life jackets were under the front seat of the boat.
Barbara Lee grabbed a floating bucket with a lid that had her glasses & this kept her afloat until I could get her to the boat. She said, "I don't think I can make it" as the waves kept pouring down on us. I said, yes you can & got her live jacket & helped her into it & helped her on top of the boat. She calmed down some then.
She helped me into my jacket as I was still in the water. We always carry an extra jacket in case of an emergency for someone else in the water & I had her to throw it into the water in hopes someone would see it along with our coolers with all our water, food & drinks that had floated away. I managed to get another bucket from under the boat with our air horn & first aid kit.
We only saw 1 boat & they did not see or hear us. I tried to swim with the current & wind pulling the boat with her on top towards the shore. We were about 3 miles out when this happened but the SW wind kept picking up & pushing us farther away from help. After about an hour, I was finally able to get my feet on the bottom & started pulling the boat, still upside down towards the shore. After about 3 hours, we reached land but way North of Rodanthe. We were able to lift a front corner of the boat to release the suction & water so we could bail it out. But on the way in to the shore, we had other problems. I had just installed a rod rack just like on the front of a 4 WD to carry 4 extra rods. When the boat was turned over, the rods started dragging the bottom, slowing us down & getting more water on us, so I had to pull them out & put them on top with Barbara Lee. Then as it became more shallow, the outboard motor (5HP & 50 pounds) started dragging so I had to take it off & put it on top. After resting for a few minutes & getting together what we could salvage, I started the motor. I was shocked that it started but that didn't last long. When we pushed into deeper water, it finally died out completely.
The wind was too strong to row & the tide was coming in. We took turns pulling each other so that one could rest while the other pulled & walked close to shore looking for a way to get to Rt #12. It was getting dark & still no sign of help even though our truck was still at the Campground Sailing Center. When it got too dark to see, we pulled into a cove & used an aluminum blanket from our first aid kit to cover up while we rested in the bottom of the boat, praying for help.
We both fell asleep from exhaustion & no food or water since noon. We only had 4 sticks of chewing gum. Barbara Lee had prayed for God to let the moon come out so we could find our way to help. Hours later when we awoke from being cold & wet, the moon was out. By this time I was totally exhausted & Barbara Lee started pulling again. Finally, she found a board walk just outside Rodanthe. I stayed in the boat while she walked about 1/2 mile to Rt #12 where a couple picked her up, gave her 2 bottles of water & took her to get our truck. This was at 1:37 am Saturday morning July 3rd. By the time she got me back to the campground, it was almost 3:00 am. We thanked God for keeping us alive but could not help wondering why no help came.
The next day, we also asked ourselves, how could 2 old people, age 62 & 60, without their feet touching bottom, turn a boat half full of water upside down? Someone said, adrenalin, I said no, an Angel, because we didn't have the strength & it happen so fast. I called the Coast Guard to report our disaster & asked him about no help. They told me they stress to all campgrounds as well as others to report anything suspicious, ie: our truck was parked there all day & when darkness came, it was still there but we had not returned. After checking with the employee who knows us & saw us leave Friday morning, he said that when he left at 5:30 pm, he informed the security guard that we were still out there & to leave the gate unlocked as the sailing center is on the soundside & the campground is on the ocean side divided by Rt #12. The Coast Guard said that the campgrounds are not legally bound to report these things but they should be reported just for concern to our fellow men. In other words, if you saw someone drowning, would you help them or let them drown ?
In this case, the Security Guard clearly dropped ball & almost cost 2 people their lives. All he had to do was make 1 phone call & the Coast Guard or The Chicamacomico Life Saving Station, which is right there in Rodanthe would have been on the way & we would not have had to stay over 13 1/2 hours in the water without food or water, especially water.
The next morning after a few hours of sleep, we went to get the boat with our 1 man boat loader to haul on top of our Jimmy,(our loader is a 1 man & 1 woman loader) We lost a lot of equipment & a tackle box full of lures & years of memories but we didn't lose each other thanks to The Good Lord. I hope you can print this story to make others more aware of situations like this where just a phone call can save lives. In our case, the guard knew we had not returned & failed to help his fellow man.

The following was taken from the Daily Times, in 2007:

Moving but not leaving

It is a pleasure to watch artists woodworkers or painters or gardeners or musicians or a seamstress or even a good preacher. It is a pleasure to watch someone create a beautiful thing out of the materials at hand. I have never thought of disassembly as an art until the Nuchols' moving van showed up earlier this week to move us back to Atlanta, but the work of their hands is art indeed.
The Nuchols and their steady helpers have been helping Blount County families move for three generations, going on four. Seventy years ago, Jack Nuchols Sr.'s father had a pickup truck with wooden slats on the sides, and you can imagine the roads back then. So for generations this little band of big, quiet men has shown up on the doorstep, and piece by piece gently moved a family's small world. Think of the organizing and packing and lifting and carefully arranging in the truck like the pieces of a puzzle. Think of the potentially hysterical people they encounter for it is deeply disturbing to have your world taken apart.
Jesus taught his followers to get along without an extra cloak and to depend on the kindness of strangers for their next night's sleep. But most of us gather a great deal more stuff around us. Pictures and plates and sofas and pots and bed linens and chairs and clothes and desks and televisions and whew. All of it has got to get from here to there, and even if you do a great job of giving away and throwing away, there is a lot of stuff left to deal with, and of course so many cherished keepsakes and deep layers of memories. It is so hard to disassemble your home, even when the promise of the new is inviting.
Carroll and I are returning to Atlanta because we want to be closer to our family. We are keeping our little mountain place outside of Walland so you are not rid of us, but our jobs and most of our time will be in Atlanta. We want to take back with us the values we have learned in Blount County. Here are the things we have learned from our friends and colleagues and my parish and from many of the people we have done business with like the Nuchols. Here are keepsakes of character which we hope to cherish and live in forever.

Mastering martial arts: Nuchols active in discipline since 1961

By Melanie Tucker of The Daily Times Staff

Karate for a young night school student named Harold Nuchols back in the 1960s meant he could leave his parked car on city streets at dusk and not fear who he would meet.
The Walland High School graduate was holding down a day job and attending the University of Tennessee at night. An article in the Knoxville newspaper about an assault on the Cumberland Avenue Strip left this young student feeling vulnerable and he decided to take action, signing on for karate classes with Master Harold Long.
That was 48 years ago, and Nuchols has been practicing this martial art ever since.
The student became a teacher of Isshinryu, a style of karate that was introduced in 1954 by Tatsuo Shimabuku. Isshinryu means one heart/one mind and uses close-in techniques practical for street use. Nuchols said after a stint in the Army from 1963-1965, he continued to learn under Long and also began teaching classes in the area. He taught some at Maryville College, the local YWCA and at a karate school in Knoxville. Then his pastor at Cades Cove Baptist Fellowship in Maryville asked if Nuchols could offer classes at the church -- for free.
Nuchols jumped on the idea. That was about five years ago, and the classes are still meeting, each Monday and Thursday evening. The only cost involved for his students is for safety equipment and the proper attire.
Over the years young teens, twenty-somethings, middle-aged moms and dads and others who simply want the skills needed for self defense have attended Nuchols' classes. He also is aided in his teaching by his son Stephen Nuchols and also Andy Welshan. Both also have extensive training in the martial arts, including jiujitsu and aikido.

Street smart

"The people taking my classes now are mostly taking it for street (defense)," Nuchols said. He said he will help those interested in competing in tournaments, but the practical application is what brings most students to his door.
He said the instruction will provide them with a higher level of self confidence and the necessary techniques to handle any situation.
That doesn't mean students should go looking for a fight, however. Nuchols' philosophy is simple: "Your best defense is what you have between your two ears."
"You have to use your head," this 8th degree black belt said. "Use the diplomatic approach, Talk your way out of a situation if you can."
Nuchols, who just turned 68 this month, is retired from ALCOA Inc. after 37 years. He said of all the students he has taught over the years, none has gotten in trouble with the law as far as he knows.

Martial arts expert

In all these years, this martial arts expert said he has never had to use his skills to get out of a dangerous situation. "That is one of my greatest achievements," he said. He wasn't even 20 when he began his training.
There are 10 black belt levels to achieve in Isshinryu, and Nuchols has reached the 8th degree.
He said he probably has the requirements to move up to 9th, but rank isn't something he focuses on. A belt, he said, is for holding up your pants.
There is room in his classes for more students, and Nuchols is eager and ready to share his knowledge. He said students come and go as they leave for college, change work schedules or move away. He plans to keep teaching as long as people are interested.
Pierce saw these classes as an outreach opportunity, and it has been exactly that. Nuchols said he invites his karate students to church and offers them information on services but he doesn't stand up there and deliver a sermon. All denominations are welcome.
"If you show up, I teach," he said.
