Maryville Police - alertness praised - Dear Editor:

   I would like to take a few moments to thank the Maryville Police Department and Chief Tony Crisp for the outstanding level of service that they are providing the citizens of Maryville. Virtually everyday I see a high number of arrests, thefts and vandalisms listed in the local roundup section of The Daily Times and I wonder what has happened to our society.
   Several nights ago I too became a victim by virtue of a burglary at my car lot. Fortunately for me, the Maryville Police Department was at my service as vigilant as ever. A thief was apprehended while in progress of his burglary due to the diligent effort of Maryville Police Department Officer Robert Petty who observed a suspicious young man attempt to hide his presence on the property at around midnight. He and Maryville Police Department Supervisor Sgt. Gary Nitzband managed to capture the thief after a short foot chase through the use of exceptional police work and with the aid of several other unnamed Maryville Police Department officers and an investigator who later processed the scene and interviewed the thief.
   I truly appreciate the hard work and true dedication that each of these men has given as well as the professionalism that they exhibit daily. We can thank our founding fathers for the constitution that guarantees our rights and freedom; we should thank and pray for the soldiers that serve and die to keep us free; and we should definitely thank and support the law enforcement officers that fight the war on crime here at home to keep us safe and secure. Their efforts often go unnoticed until we become a victim. Thank you,

But why would I want to. Several people have made the comment to me, that when I graduate I need to move off somewhere and start my own life. I don't understand why anyone would ever want to leave a place that makes them so happy. That's what the south does for me. I love eating Sunday dinner with my family (and that's everybody, not just Momma and Daddy) ever week. I love walking across acres of land that will be left to me one day, and fishing in the same pond that my great-great grandfather did, and that my great-great grandchildren will. To me southern culture is about tradition and family. I believe that everyone changes with time, but that doesn't mean that we forget who we are and where we came from. The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported a fatal wreck over the weekend.
Kevin L. Pendergrass, 20, of 1615 Mountain View Lot 5 in Sevierville, and Rebecca M. Nuchols, 20, of 831 Black Oak Ridge Road in Seymour, died from the wreck, according to Master Trooper Arthur Galyon of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Nuchols was 36 weeks pregnant, and the baby also died. The accident occurred just after noon on Saturday when a 1994 Ford Explorer, driven by Pendergrass, crossed over the double-yellow line while traveling southbound on Upper Middle Creek Road into oncoming traffic and struck a 1994 GMC Sierra pick-up head-on, Galyon said. Galyon said, "They were all unrestrained" in the Explorer. The surviving passenger in the Pendergrass vehicle was in critical condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center Monday, according to authorities. Kelly Santella, 20, of 3105 Clintwood Way No. 4 in Pigeon Forge, was injured in the wreck. She was in the rear seat. The driver of the Sierra, Richie A. Bradley, 29, of 2209 Bradley Way in Sevierville, was treated and released from UTMC, Galyon said. A passenger in his truck, April J. Justus, 26, of 3010 Peacock Lane in Dandridge, was also released from UTMC with a broken arm and some facial lacerations. Pendergrass was dead on arrival at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center, Galyon said. The others were flown to UTMC by Lifestar.

A RESOLUTION to recognize Lindsey Denise Nuchols, 2000 Salutatorian of Heritage High School.

WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should pause to pay tribute to those persons who, through their natural talents and unflagging commitment to academic excellence, have distinguished themselves in the classroom; and

WHEREAS, Lindsey Nuchols is one such exceptional student who was recently named salutatorian of the 2000 graduating class at Heritage High School; and

WHEREAS, through diligent study, steady composure during examinations, and unyielding commitment of time and talent, Lindsey has achieved outstanding academic success, and has joined the ranks of the best and brightest students in Tennessee and our country; and

WHEREAS, in her remarkable high school career, Lindsey Nuchols has earned an exemplary grade point average; and
