Armed with only a small telescope and the night sky, Richard White started his exploration of the cosmos at a very early age.
When he was a little kid, he had a telescope, and he would put it on our front walk, up on Willow Drive in Maryville, and come flying in the house, his mother, Oneida, said.
"Momma come out here. You've got to see this. I can see the rings of Saturn."
Now, Richard White, who has since added a 'doctor' to the front of his name, is a part of a group of scientists at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore that recently discovered what they call the most convincing evidence yet that a mysterious substance called 'dark matter' exists in the universe.
What is dark matter? Scientists are not quite sure.
"We really don't know what this stuff is," White said. "Its really quite a mystery, since most of the mass in the universe is made up of this stuff, and we just have the faintest idea of what it might be."
By that, White explains there is six times as much dark matter in the universe as there is normal matter. Normal matter is "everything we see around us," he said. "Including the stuff in the room, the stuff you're made of, the stuff the earth's made of."
"Dark matter doesn't reflect light so it is invisible. And it can pass right through regular matter; it's in the room around you right now," White said. "But scientists can see the effects of the gravity associated with dark matter much like seeing the effects of wind as it causes ripples on the surface of a lake. So they know something has to be there."
Announced May 17, the Hubble telescope discovered a hazy ring of distorted light in an area of space 5 billion light years away, which, coincidentally, means the light from the area originated before our solar system came into existence.
These rings, which are caused when light is bent by surrounding gravitational forces, aren't uncommon in the universe. But when the 'gravitational lensing' takes place and there isn't anything around to explain why, for scientists like Richard White, that's exciting. When he and his team realized what they had discovered, it was a thrilling experience.
"Because there wasn't anything in that area of space to explain the gravitational distortion, We really didn't believe the results to begin with," he said. "So we spent a long time trying to understand what could have gone wrong ... and in the end, concluded that the measurement was correct."
White grew up in a time when the U.S. space program was just getting its legs, and like many kids his age in the early 1960’s, he wanted to be an astronaut.
"But at that time, you had to be perfect to be an astronaut, and I had glasses," he said. "So I couldn’t be an astronaut if I had glasses."
Still fascinated with space in general, White looked at his options and chose the next best thing.
"I decided very early on that astronomy was what I wanted to do," he said.
White graduated from Maryville High School in 1971 at the age of 17. He went on to get his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and then his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin in Madison by the time he was 25.
His mother saw his interest in space spark at a young age, and with other proficiencies in math and science, his career choice just made sense, especially because it's something he loved to do.
"It is just something that is so absorbing to him," Oneida said. "That he doesn't do this with great effort, he does it with such enjoyment and pleasure. He is blessed to be in a field that he just loves and that he can get up and go to work and feel like, ‘I'm going to do what I like to do."
For White, that love of space is what greets him at work every day.
"What's not to like?" he asked. "It's something that's been of interest to people ever since people were able to think. They would look up at the sky and look at the stars and wonder what the stars were," he said. "So it's just part of human nature to be interested in it."
For kids who have the same kinds of scientific aspirations, White had one specific pointer.
"Study math," he said with a laugh. "If its something you're interested in, I would encourage kids to give it a try. "It's not easy to succeed in a career in a field like astronomy, but for people who are willing to work hard and are dedicated to it, it's a great career, its really fun."
