J.H. was on the building committee when Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church was first erected. He was a Deacon, and served as Sunday School Superintendent for 35 years. He had attended the Lutheran School on Duncan Road, and when he died, his former school teacher, Henry Thomas Clemens, wrote to a local paper about him. J.H. was one of his scholars, being a very good reader, and baseball player.
J.H. was a farmer and owned a threshing machine. He went all over the area to help his friends. He had been a school teacher earlier, and liked to tell funny things that happened. He taught most of his grandchildren to count, by counting baby rabbits in a picture, which hung on the wall. He liked people, and never met a person without asking their name.
He went to Knoxville with his son-in-law and granddaughter years before his death, to buy his burial suit.
Callie was a very quite person. A granddaughter once visited Rev. John McCampbell of Dry Valley, in orfer to learn more about Callie/s relatives. He knew nothing, but remembered that Callie rode side saddle on a horse through Cades Cove. The side saddle hung in the wood shed until her death.
The White family always took the Knoxville paper. When their son, Ollie, married and had a family, his wife would read the newspaper to his parents. They loved to have her read the bible, newspapers, novels and the such to them. Callie had a large growth in the palate of her mouth, and didn't talk very much. When she did speak, it was to the point, and rarely spoke of her health.
