Thomas Lamar Nuchols Rachel Susan Davis 31. Thomas Lamar Nuchols

b. 20 Jul 1875 in Blount County, Tennessee. He died 19 Jun 1967, Damascus, Maryland, and was buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Blount County, Tennessee. She was born 1 Nov 1873, Blount County, Tennessee, and died 12 Nov 1965, Blount County, Tennessee. Rachel was buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Blount County, Tennessee.

Thomas Lamar received a good education, and attended Maryville College, playing on their first football team. He was heard to say that he was on the only Maryville team to beat U.T. He was also a Justice of the Peace. Soon after his and Susan's first house burned, one which he had built, a couple came to be married. Thomas was in the bed, while Susan was mending his only pair of breeches. The couple had to wait until Thomas was presentable!
He was a man of many interests. He taught school in a one-room school house, and could add a column of figures in his head faster than any of his students with pencil and paper. He served five terms in the Tennessee State Legislature, and was instrumental in legislating the preservation of the Sam Houston School House.
At one time, Thomas owned a loan company, and another time, Tarvin Pulverizing Company, a manufacturing firm. He went to southern Texas on a land promotion deal, and bought a farm of some fifty acres, in this semi-tropical part of the country. His younger son, James, took over this farm, raising winter vegetables and tropical fruits.
Thomas was a leader in Baptist Churches in Blount County. He was Chairman of the Building Committee for the First Baptist Church Education Building on Depot Street. He was a Charter Member of Monte Vista Baptist Church, and Chairman of their Building Committee.
Thomas developed a real estate company, buting and selling properties as well as retaining rental property. He built the building at 123 W. Broadway, for the Roses Stores. He later gave the building in equal shares to his children. Thomas, and his wife, lived long and useful lives, leaving many good deeds, as well as many descendants.
Rachel Susan was born a caretaker, and had responsibility for the family at a very young age. She said that she raised her younger brother, Homer.
Her education was hit and miss. She would send her brothers and sister to school, while she cleaned house and prepared a lunch to take to them. She was a strong believer in education.
Both of her daughters, Sara and Mary, were college graduates, teaching in Blount County.
For her wedding to Thomas, Susan decorated the house with apple blossoms. She loves all plants and flowers, and every home she lived in was made lovely with them. Susan was always willing to help anyone who needed her; family, friends, or even strangers.

Around Town

"In Apple Blossom Time" fifty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Tom Nuchols were married. Sunday, they received their friends and relatives at their home in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary and on the old fashioned mantle in the living room their children arranged their wedding photograph surrounded by masses of appie blooms, no doubt calling back many memories of their wedding day so long ago when apple blossoms were the only flowers used for the wedding decorations. The Nuchols home was beautifully decorated for the occasion with masses of gift flowers. Mrs. Nuchols wore a dress of powder blue and her corsage was golden throated orchids, a" far cry from the apple blossoms of long ago. Mrs. Edgar Gates, sister of Mrs. Nuchols, and Miss May Nuchols, Mr. Nuchols' sister, presided at the tea table. About 250 friends and relatives called during the afternoon.

Lou Anna was a school teacher, along with her sister, May. They taught in one room school houses. One day, while teaching at Walland shcool, she saw a man riding by on a horse, and it was love at first sight. She met and married Rapha. He taught in her place, while she was making wedding plans.
The author of the book "The History of the Garland Family", tells that Rapha lived for many years in Blount County, Tennessee. He recalls how as a youngster how well dressed he always appeared.
