After graduation from college, he served as Floyd County Judge from 1923 to 1926. He taught a Wayland College in Plainview, Texas, prior to moving from Floydada, to Amarillo, on January 2, 1927. He was Judge of the Potter County Court of Law from March 19, 1931 until it was abolished by the Governor on April 25, 1933. He was Judge of the 47th District Court from January 1, 1935 to December 31, 1939.

In 1969, he was severly injured in an automobile accident, which killed his brother James Weldon Standefer. While receiving treatment in the Veterns Hospital in Houston, Texas, and X-Ray technician jerked his neck, which paralyzed him. He was a quadriplegic for the remainder of his life.
