She was born 24 May 1934 in Ridgeland, Jasper County, South Carolina. Sidney was inducted into the US Air Force on January 4, 1951, and proudly served until his retirement July 1, 1971. He was Crew Chief on a B-29 while working in engine maintenance. Later, he cross-trained into the Command Post. His love of planes always stayed with him. After his retirement from the Air Force, he moved his family to Gordon County, where he was employed by Dow Chemical until his retirement there in 1995. He was happiest outdoors on his tractor or just outside enjoying nature.

On January 9th, 1995, an article appeared in the Daily Times, a Blount County, Tennessee, newspaper, which read:

BLOUNT NATIVE $5.3M RICHER

Lottery winner not interested in luxuries.

A Blount County native is $5.3 million richer than he was Dec. 31, but says he's not interested in condominiums, Cadillacs or other luxuries. "I don't anticipate significant lifestyle changes," Gene Nuchols told the Daily Times a few days after confirming his Georgia lottery jackpot win.
Nuchols, who now lives in Calhoun, Ga., says he's gotten plenty of offers in the last few days to buy condominiums in Florida, Cadillacs or other luxury cars, and a variety of other expensive items. "We're not interested in that kind of thing," Nuchols says. "What this means is that Dora and I can do what we want to do and when we want to do it."
Nuchols says he and his wife Dora are happy about their good fortune but there has been "no wild emotion." "It's a whatever kind of feeling," Nuchols says. "We're trying to be calm but then I'm not the kind of person that gets all excited about things."
Nuchols says his mother Verna and his brother and sister-in-law, David and Jo nuchols, all of Tuckaleechee Pike in Maryville, may be more excited than he and his wife. Jo Nuchols, a secretary at Blount County Sheriff's Department was elated, sharing the good news with everyone she met the day after she learned of the win. Daughters Genora, Susan and Rebecca - are also "happy for us but there's enough of me in them that they're not all up in the air." the family also includes three grandchildren - Genora's little girl and Susan's twin boy and girl.
Nuchols grew up on Tuckaleechee Pike, attended Union School and graduated from Everett High School in 1950. He joined the U.S. Air Force in January 1951 and met his wife Dora, a native of Ridgeland, S.C., while stationed in Savannah, Ga., not far from her hometown. Nuchols retired from military service in July 1971. Less than a month later, he went back to work at Dow Chemical Company's facility in Dalton, Ga., and the family made its home in nearby Calhoun. Nuchols is now a warehouse coordinator at Dow after more than 23 years with the company. "I have been eligible fo retirement for five or six months but hadn't gone ahead with it," Nuchols says. "Now there's no reason to put it off. I'm Retiring at the end of January."
Nuchols says his wife asked him to pick up some Lotto Georgia tickets when he went to the store on New Year's Eve day and he bought five tickets. He says they buy tickets "when the mood strikes." About 11 p.m. on New Year's Eve, Nuchols said he was reading and his wife was watching the lottery drawing on television. She wrote down the numbers on a pad and then compared the numbers to her tickets. Her fifth ticket matched. "I wasn't sure if I read the numbers right," she said. Nuchols said she asked him to take a look at the numbers she had written down and compare them to the ticket. He agreed they matched. The couple was unable to confirm they had the winning ticket until the Georgia Lottery Corporation offices opened on Tuesday, Jan. 3, so they didn't share their news until a trip to Atlanta to certify the win. The six-number match means the couple will receive approximately $263,000 a year for 20 years. A lottery corporation spokesman said the prize money is invested in interest-bearing securities and winners receive all the principal and interest earned in 20 annual installments.
Nuchols says part of the money is already in the bank but he and his wife are in no hurry to spend it. Other than his retirement, he expects few changes in what he describes as "a pretty good life already."
